360 Knife Block wins America’s Test Kitchen Best Universal Knife Block
In the quest for the perfect kitchen knife storage solution, America’s Test Kitchen conducted a comprehensive review of ten different universal knife blocks, ranging in price from $25 to nearly $250. The review focused on safety, durability, design, and ease of cleanup. The knife blocks were tested using the America’s Test Kitchen a la carte knife set. The first group of knife blocks, which held knives in place with bristles, folds of plastic, or an open grid system, were found to lack durability, with bristles shedding or bending, plastic folds getting nicked, and the open grid system chipping. Additionally, some of these blocks posed safety issues with blades sticking out, and stability issues when fully loaded with knives. The second group of knife blocks, which utilized magnets to hold the knives in place, were more impressive. The strength of the magnets was a crucial factor; they needed to be strong enough to hold the knives securely, but not so strong that it was a struggle to remove a knife. The winning universal knife block was the 360 Knife Block by Design Trifecta, priced at $248.64. This block featured a rotating design, excellent magnetic coverage, and a heavy, stable base. It was also easy to clean and durable. For those on a budget, the Schmidt Brothers Midtown Knife Block was recommended as a best buy at $68. It had good magnetic coverage and the right strength, but was slightly smaller and not as easy to use or clean due to plastic sheaths. Our review suggests that investing in a high-quality knife block can provide better design and functionality, contributing to a safer and more efficient kitchen environment.
